The Four Phases of Suicide Loss
Tracy Oeser and Journey Thru Grief have designed the “Four Phases of Suicide Loss.”
Nobody moves through these phases once; it is a process. It is normal for you to move back and forth on your journey.
Resources by phase
Why do we have phases of suicide loss?
Because one size does not fit all. Find the description that closely matches how you feel and then review the informational content within that phase. Please email and tell us if these help or, anything else we could bring to you.
Devastation Phase
If you just lost someone to suicide, you are here. We know you are flooded with multiple emotions hitting you at the same time. It probably feels like the floor has been jerked out from under you. THESE FEELINGS ARE NORMAL! It is easy to want to isolate because you are scared. Many resources are designed for you. They take into account that you are not remembering things, you are in a fog, and you are just trying to wake up every day and get through it.

You will spend a lot of time in this phase. We know you have many ‘why’ questions and that is normal. The fog is still here but, you are healing even if it doesn’t seem like it.

Holding Steady Phase
It has taken a lot of questions and hours of memories to get here. Setbacks will come but, you probably won’t see them constantly. You start to segment between the loss and your future. You are defining yourself in the midst of your new normal. There could still be some questioning as you grow so, you may jump back to other phases occasionally.

Acceptance Phase
If you are new to suicide loss, you probably don’t feel like this phase will ever include you. If you have traveled your journey, worked through the ‘why’ questions, and are living again in present time both mentally and emotionally then you have a lot to be proud of. The natural progression of a long-term loss survivor brings you to this phase. You have not forgotten your loved one and you can travel right back to the moment of devastation if you choose. But, now the possibility of your future seems acceptable. In this phase, you may want to give back and share your story with others. Just because your loss is not recent though, we know you still need long-term support.
